Alle burde lære førstehjelp og da også Turnike

Right now, as a medical student, my life is spent in the books. But before beginning my journey in medical school, I was an Army Ranger and deployed eight times to combat. Let me share a story from one of those deployments, about Zak Graner, and how tourniquets saved his life.

Dr. Frank Butler received the Maj. Jonathan Letterman Medical Excellence Award on Sept. 15.

Butler, a retired Navy captain and eye surgeon who works at Pensacola Naval Hospital, was the command surgeon for U.S. special operations when American forces entered Afghanistan after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
In response to a high number of special forces soldiers bleeding to death from gunshot wounds or roadside bomb attacks, Butler led the push to have every soldier trained in tourniquet use and to carry tourniquets as part of their standard-issue equipment. The tourniquets are credited with saving the lives of thousands of soldiers.
The 2017 Letterman Award recognized Butler as medical leader and innovator in battlefield medicine. The award also recognized Butler for his work with the Department of Defense's Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care and the White House Stop The Bleed campaign, which has brought combat medical techniques to police and other first responders.

The Stop The Bleed initiative pushes for tourniquets to be available in schools, shopping centers, airports, stadiums and other public places where mass shootings or bombings could occur. The goal of Stop The Bleed is to have tourniquet training become as common as CPR training and to have tourniquets located next to defibrillators in public places.
