            Instability Questions About Zumwalt Destroyer Are Nothing New

            WASHINGTON — The advanced destroyer Zumwalt (DDG 1000) is scheduled to put to sea next week to begin a series of sea trials. It will be the first time the 610-foot-long ship meets the ocean, the culmination of concept and design work that began in the 1990s.

                        The USS Zumwalt has yet to officially join the Navy's fleet as one of its most advanced destroyer ships, but it has already helped bring a man to safety.
                        The advanced guided missile destroyer, which boasts stealth capabilities and will one day help support Special Operations forces, responded on Saturday to a distress call from a fishing boat off the coast of Maine, rescuing a fisherman who was experiencing chest pains.

                        The stealth destroyer's crew -- a combination of Navy personnel and employees of Bath Iron Works, which is testing the ship -- deployed to the fishing vessel on an inflatable boat to hoist the distressed fisherman aboard the Zumwalt.

                            The Navy’s newest futuristic weapon, therailgun, a weapons system that utilizes a combination of electric and magnetic force to fire a projectile, may skip an at-sea prototype phase and be directly outfitted on a*Zumwalt-class destroyer, possibly the USS*Lyndon B.                                     US Navy har kun haft den topmoderne stealth destroyer “USS Zumwalt” i få uger. Nu er der problemer med ammunitionen ifht de to 155mm kanoner. Den koster lidt for meget. Ca 5,4 millioner kroner pr skud.

                                      Excalibur was developed as a longer-ranged alternative to conventional artillery shells, with GPS guidance for improved accuracy.[6] Excalibur has a range of approximately 40 to 57 kilometres (25 to 35*mi) depending on configuration, with a circular error probable (CEP) of around 5 metres (16*ft) to 20 metres (66*ft).[7][8][9][10][11] The extended range is achieved through the use of folding glide fins, which allow the projectile to glide from the top of a ballistic arc towards the target.

                                      The munition was co-developed by United States-based Raytheon Missile Systems (guidance system) and the Swedish BAE Systems Bofors (body, base, ballistics and payload).[6] Excalibur is used to minimize collateral damage, for targets beyond the range of standard munitions, for precise firing within 150 metres (490*ft) of friendly troops, or when firing in a straight line from the launching cannon is limited by terrain.[6][12] It has a multi-function fuze that can be programmed to explode in the air, once it hits a hard surface, or after it penetrates inside a target.[13] One Excalibur projectile can accurately hit an intended target that would require the use of between 10 and 50 unguided artillery rounds.[14]

                                      Initial combat experience with Excalibur in Iraq in the summer of 2007 was highly successful, with 92% of rounds falling within 4 metres (13*ft) of the target. Its performance was so impressive that the U.S. Army planned to increase production to 150 rounds per month from the previous 18 rounds per month.

                                          The USS Lyndon B. Johnson, the last of the embattled Zumwalt-class destroyers, was launched on Sunday at Bath Iron Works.

                                          The destroyers don't have any ammunition for their big guns, and the Navy is thinking about scrapping the guns altogether.
