Why Is India Buying More Russian Jets Instead Of ‘Highly-Competent’ Rafale Aircraft?
Amid escalating border tensions between India and China, New Delhi has approved to spend billions to purchase Russian fighter planes. Tensions between the India Army and Chinese PLA troops escalated after a violent, savagery border clash killing 20 Indian soldiers and unconfirmed number on the Chinese side.
The Defense Ministry today (2. juli) approved the purchase of 33 new fighter jets including 21 MiG-29s from Russia. While the new fighter jets add to the arsenal of the Indian Air Force (IAF), experts have labelled the purchase as ‘wrong’.
In a deal inked earlier today, Moscow will sell New Delhi 33 new fighter aircraft including 12 Su-30MKIs and 21 MiG-29s along with up-gradation of 59 MiG-29s. The MiG 29 procurement and up-gradation from Russia is estimated to cost Rs 7418 cr, the Su-30 MKI will be procured from HAL at an estimated cost of Rs 10,730 cr.
Additionally, The Defence Acquisition Council approved the acquisition of various platforms and equipment required by the Indian Armed Forces for an approximate cost of Rs 38,900 cr and also cleared the acquisition of 248 Astra Beyond Visual Range air-to-air missiles for the Indian Air Force and the Navy.
The latest acquisitions come at the time of escalated border tensions between India and China. As reported by EurAsian Times earlier, troops on both sides have been deployed in Ladakh along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since the first week of June with both sides trying to disengage.
Experts speaking to EurAsian Times justify the acquisitions as preparation for the long haul in the tussle with China. Despite de-escalation talks, the situation with the LAC is not expected to improve and instead India is preparing for a two-front war with China and Pakistan.
Su-30s, MiG 29s vs Rafale
While new jets would be a big boost to any air force, in the eyes of experts, the acquisition of Russian Sukhoi’s and MiGs are ‘wrong’. Aviation expert Tom Cooper has expressed his surprise that the Indian air force reportedly wants Su-30s and MiG-29s to meet its emergency requirement for a couple of squadrons worth of jets.
According to Cooper writing for the Forbes, the Su-30, while seemingly impressive on paper, lacks performance and combat capability compared to Western models and is a poor fit for mountain patrol. He also points out that the Russian made Su-30s had failed to perform during the war in Kargil 1999 and Balakot Airstrikes in 2019 and instead the Mirage-2000s had proven to be more effective.
The aviation expert also added that the Su-30 not only lacks the latest precision to the air-to-ground weapons, but it also does not perform well from high altitude bases.
Speaking about the Mig 29, Cooper said that while it performs better than the Su-30, it is still not the correct choice for the IAF. The MiG-29s that New Delhi plans to buy from Russia are outdated models that Russian workers will refurbish before handing over and they are simply not up to the task.
Experts believe that India could have instead used the money to procure more 5th generation Rafale fighter jets from France. So far India has ordered 36 jets from Paris with 6 scheduled for delivery later this month.
Currently, India has 230 Su-30s and 60 MiG 29’s in service. To prepare for a two-front war with Islamabad and Beijing, New Delhi is looking to increase its squadron strength from 28 to 40. The IAF has a mix of fighters including Russian MiGs and Sukhois, French Mirage 2000s and Rafales, Indian Tejas and British Jaguars.

According to a report Indian Air Force (IAF) has officially informed Indian Government that it doesn’t want to induct American developed NASAMS II, which New Delhi has been negotiating with Washington $1 billion deal for NASAMS II which included Missile packages like AIM-120D and AIM-9X Air-to-Air missiles.
AF rather preferred to procure local systems like VL-SRSAM (Vertically Launched -Short-range Surface Air to Missile ) System based on Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile which is similar to NASAMS II which DRDO has started developing. idrw.org has been informed that VL-SRSAM will be developed in two variants for Air Force and Indian Navy.
The air force will get high mobility Truck-mounted canister based VL-SRSAM and Navy will get Canister based VL-SRSAM for its front-line warships which will replace aging Israeli supplied Barak-1 Point Defence interceptor missiles which were procured after India ended its Tri-service Trishul SRSAM program in 2006 due to technical issues. Defense Analysts in India also have objected need for the NASAMS II multi-layered Air defense system due to the availability of local missile systems like Akash and QRSAM air defense systems which have the same capabilities.
Some have even claimed that integration of Indian, Israeli, American, and Russian Air defense systems under one Integrated Air defense system will be difficult due to interoperability issues with the various system Air defense system.
That said, it is unclear if the IAF’s word will impact active ongoing India-US negotiations to acquire the NASAMS-II system (min utheving). The Indian government kickstarted the procurement process in 2018, with the MoD according acceptance of necessity (AoN) for a NASAMS-II based ‘Integrated Air Defence Weapon System’ for the Delhi region, even though it isn’t strictly an anti-missile system. A steep dollar price tag — nearly double the $1 billion budgeted by India for the procurement — has slowed progress.

The stalemate is symptomatic of the larger issue that plagues Make in India –– the setting up of new weapons facilities is cost intensive, pushing up the cost of domestically manufactured arms and making them more expensive than direct imports. However, these costs can be brought down in the long run by mass production and pursuing export opportunities.

Defence Ministry Clears 248 Astra Missile, 200 for IAF and 48 for Navy
In a major boost to the Indian armed forces, the Defence Ministry has cleared the acquisition of 248 Astra Beyond Visual Range air-to-air missiles, marking the first acquisition of the indigenous DRDO-developed missiles. Of these missiles, the Navy will get 48 Astra missiles for its MiG-29K fighter jets, while 200 missiles have been acquired for its 33 new Russian fighter planes including 12 Su-30 MKIs and 21 MiG-29s.
Proposals worth Rs 38,900 crore have been cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council, of which Rs 31,130 crore would be from the Indian industry. ASTRA is a Beyond Visual Range (BVR) class of Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) system designed to be mounted on fighter aircraft. The missile is designed to engage and destroy highly maneuvering supersonic aircraft. The missile has all-weather day and night capability. The missile is being developed in multiple variants to meet specific requirements. The ASTRA Mk-I Weapon System integrated with SU-30 MkI aircraft is being inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) and can be launched in autonomous and buddy mode of operation with features for Lock-On-Before Launch (LOBL) and Lock-On After Launch (LOAL).

Ifølge Shah vil beslutningen tre i kraft umiddelbart.

India said on Monday its first domestically built nuclear-powered submarine had recently completed a "deterrence patrol," giving it the capability to fire nuclear weapons from land, air, and sea in the event of any "misadventure" by enemies.
With nuclear-armed China to its north and nuclear-armed Pakistan to its west - both of which India has fought wars with - India's nationalist prime minister, Narendra Modi, said the INS Arihant was a "fitting response to those who indulge in nuclear blackmail."
He did not elaborate.

The Indian military is mobilising nearly 100 tanks near its border with China as part of latest measures to beef up its presence in the region.
The deployment of the T-72 tanks in the remote mountainous region is directly aimed at challenging what it sees as Beijing's aggressive stance in the border area. The tanks have been deployed after the Indian forces made some significant improvement in their operations.

I 2012 publiserte Reuters en artikkel som stilte det ledende spørsmålet "Analysis: India's military build up may be too little too late?" hvor det avsluttes med kommunikasjonen som kanskje ikke er av den beste de to landene Kina og India imellom: "There needs to be much more communication, especially navy to navy, because they are bumping into each other more and more."
Kilde: The grand design of China's new trade routes:Recognizing that it can only shift a small amount to inland trade routes, China will continue investing in port infrastructure along other corridors in the Belt and Road Initiative, particularly in the Indian Ocean region. To protect their growing economies, China and India have securitised their sea-borne trade routes by enhancing their naval prowess, which act enhances their seapower. This enhancement, however, causes each other concern by making each suspicious of the other’s intention. Thus, they further strengthen their navies, leading to a cycle of enhanced naval power and growing suspicion.“The word backyard is not very appropriate to use for an open sea and international areas of sea,”The Indian Ocean region was very important to China as well as other countries as it was an important channel for international trade and that is why Beijing sought relevant navigational rights through it, Zhao said.
Kilde: China: The Indian Ocean can’t be India’s backyard
I nevnte US National Military Strategy blir bl.a. følgende skrevet, og som har blitt notert av enkelte som "skummelt"Beijing is pursuing “aggressive land reclamation efforts” in the South China Sea where it is building military bases in on disputed islands. In the same region, on North Korea, “In time, they will threaten the U.S. homeland.
Fra link 2 i ditt innlegg, Znuddel:It comes as little surprise, then, that some Chinese observers see these actions as a subtle Indian attempt to encircle China by itself and together with the United States and Japan.
