One secret project is hiding in plain sight. It's the X-37B space plane, a small, remotely-piloted vehicle that can fly in space for 20 months at a time. A model of it hangs in Hyten's headquarters in Colorado.

David Martin: So here is your chance to end all the speculation about what the Space Plane is really for.

Gen. John Hyten: It's really for cool things.
    David Martin: For instance?
Gen. John Hyten: For instance, it goes up to space-- but unlike other satellites, it actually comes back. Anything that we put in the payload bay that we take up to space we can now bring back. And we can learn from that.
David Martin: Can you tell me whether or not someday the Space Plane is gonna become a weapons system?
Gen. John Hyten: The intent is-- I cannot answer that question.
David Martin: But if you're determined not to create any more debris in space, why can't you say that this might not become a weapon system?
Gen. John Hyten: I'm not gonna say what it's gonna become-- 'cause we're experimenting.

Mysterious Air Force X-37B 'Space Plane' Set For Launch

    The Huffington Post

The U.S. Air Force is set to launch its secretive "space plane" on Wednesday, the fourth flight of the mysterious unmanned X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle.

Unlike previous missions, however, the Air Force has offered details of at least part of its mission: an experimental Hall thruster. This electric propulsion device ionizes a noble gas such as xenon. The device would allow a spacecraft to carry larger payloads and perform more orbital maneuvers than one powered by traditional rocket engines.

Top secret X-37B space plane blasts off on fourth mission - but we STILL don't know what it will do in orbit or when it will be back

    • X-37B drone blasted off on a mysterious mission at 11:05 am ET
    • Theories range from it being a space bomber to destroying satellites
    • The flight will test a system that makes satellites easy to manoeuvre
    • This is probably a small part of the vehicle's true mission, say experts

ULA Atlas V conducts X-37B spaceplane launch

The US Air Force’s X-37B spaceplane began its fourth mission Wednesday, lifting off atop United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket to begin a classified mission for Air Force Space Command. The Atlas departed from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 11:05 Eastern, the opening opportunity provided by two short launch windows on Wednesday.

Sv: 60 Minutes: The Battle Above

Og som alltid er det interessant å lese kommentarfeltene til nettartikler. Som under CBS 60 Minutes videoen.

According to Wikipedia and other sources, the US military budget now exceeds 800 billion dollars, and that doesn't even include interest payment on its debt, which according to this chart i'm looking at is well over 300 billion dollars. This when we're not at war with any serious adversaries. We're spending more on our military than the next 10 countries combined. David Martin has failed to put his report in the proper context, or to ask any tough questions, focusing as usual on fancy graphics and beautifully photographed interviews with impressive spokesmen. It's still a great mystery to me where that 800 billion is going, even as our veterans are here on the streets in America getting lousy medical care and asking for handouts.

"No matter who replaces the President, I have grave difficulty believing that they can bring under control the Pentagon, the secret intelligence agencies, the military-industrial complex. The Department of Defense is NOT today the Department of Defense. It’s an alternative seat of government on the south bank of the Potomac River." ~ Chalmers Johnson, 2004

Pentagon Reports On China’s Satellite Killers

WASHINGON: From space weapons to armed drones, Chinese technology is accelerating into worrying new arenas, warns the Pentagon’s annual report on Chinese military power. But that doesn’t mean China is overtaking the US, a leading space expert cautioned, and a panicked over-reaction could drive bad policy.

“Perhaps the most worrying part of the report from a US perspective is the section talking about Chinese counterspace capabilities,” said Brian Weeden, the Secure World Foundation‘s technical advisor. “The tough question is what to do, [and] some of the potential options could make the situation worse instead of better.”

China fast builds ‘counter-space’ capabilities to counter US satellites, Pentagon warns

Part of China’s rapidly developing space program consists of testing new anti-space technologies, even though the country publicly pledges not to militarize space, the Pentagon said in a report to Congress.

“By the end of October 2014, China had launched 16 spacecraft, either domestically or via a commercial space launch provider. These spacecraft mostly expanded China’s SATCOM and ISR capabilities, while a few others tested new space technologies,” said the report detailing potential threats from China, which the US DoD released Friday.

    Klar tale:

Raytheon's GPS control system is "a disaster"
    - U.S. Air Force general

"The OCX program is a disaster, just a disaster, and it's embarrassing to have to stand in front of people and try to defend it, so I won't," Hyten told the event. "When you start down a path and you basically can't deliver and you keep pushing the system out to the right, and you keep pouring money at it, and the contractor does not deliver, you're in a tough spot."

    Sv: Romfart: Amerikas romprogram
