"The PKK is giving the kiss of life to Erdoğan and they are reawakening his dreams of having ultimate power over the country."

"Look at what the PKK did in just a week in Turkey. In the Ceylanpınar district of Şanlıurfa province they killed two police officers, Feyyaz Yumuşak and Okan Acar, in their sleep. A PKK militant, while others stood watch, broke into their house and killed these young police officers aged 24-25, firing at their necks with a gun which had a silencer. This monstrous act was defended with the claim that it was retaliation for the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) bombing that massacred 31 youngsters in Suruç, also in Şanlıurfa province. It is hard to believe such nonsensical “reasoning” can be put forward to defend a barbaric act like this. To retaliate for the killings of youngsters, they killed two other young people."

ORHAN KEMAL CENG?Z - How does PKK help Erdo?an?

They held a gun to my head, so I defended my right to live. All that has been going on since my return makes me think that what they really want to say is, “If you’re free; why didn’t you die, you were supposed to die.” You either react with your reflexes when you have a gun to your head; or you don’t. One soldier in the attack was heavily wounded before being taken to the military hospital in Şırnak. However, the soldier died despite medical efforts.

The soldier, Doğan Acar, had just finished his military service and was on his way back home. Acar on Wednesday had posted on his girlfriend's Facebook page, saying "Seven days left sweetheart, seven days till we get together.""

    TURKEY UNDER ATTACK
    Bottom Line Up Front:
    • Turkey suffered a series of terrorist attacks on Monday, the most deadly launched by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)

    • Left-wing groups were also active in Turkey, including against the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul, though with uncertain motives

    • As Turkey looks unlikely to form a coalition government before the August 23 deadline, a move into northern Syria is likely soon

    • The Syrian rebels—excepting the Islamic State—are likely to leave them to it.
Turkey’s simultaneous confrontation with the Kurds and the so-called Islamic State came to something of a head yesterday, with a spate of attacks in Istanbul and southern Turkey that carried on into the evening. The attacks in the south against police and soldiers were blamed on the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been as quick as the Turkish government to end the ceasefire reached in 2013 and resume hostilities following the bomb attack on a group of pro-Kurdish students in Suruç on July 20.

In Istanbul, the attacks on the U.S. Consulate and a police station appear to have been carried out by left-wing groups—one well-established and responsible for an attack against the U.S. Embassy in Ankara in 2013, and the other newer and apparently also responsible for an attack on the offices of a pro-Islamic State magazine in Istanbul in March. As an illustration of the mixture of confusion and conspiracy theory that has overcome public political debate in Turkey since the June 7 elections, one of the Consulate bombers is reported to have said that the attack was to avenge the Suruç bombing, which is generally ascribed to the Islamic State—though the group has not claimed responsibility.

Also on Monday, the caretaker Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, held an additional four hours of talks with the chairman of the main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), to explore the possibility of a coalition government. They agreed to meet again later in the week, but the chance of agreement remains slim. If no new government emerges by August 23, there will be new elections.

Before then, it is likely that the Turks will make a move to establish the Islamic State-free-zone in northern Syria, as agreed with the United States in late July. In anticipation of such a move, Jabhat al-Nusra, the al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, issued a statement on Sunday that it would withdraw from its positions on the front line against the Islamic State north of Aleppo. The statement explained that the group believed it wrong to support, coordinate with, or seek help from the joint Turkish and allied forces campaign in northern Syria, which it referred to purely in terms of Turkish national security concerns about the PKK.
Without criticizing Turkey, the statement went on to regret that the initiative came at a time when the Syrian Army was in retreat and the rebels were threatening the regime’s strongholds on the Syrian coast. It made a plea to all parties, both internal and external, to consider where the priorities of the struggle lay. As for the Islamic State, Jabhat al-Nusra argued that if the rebels were to combine forces, they could defeat the Islamic State without needing any outside help.

The Jabhat al-Nusra statement made no reference to the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which control the Syrian border to the east of the Euphrates and form the front line on the other side of the area held by the Islamic State. There is no love lost between the Syrian Arab rebels and the Syrian Kurds, especially as the YPG is commonly regarded to be in league with the regime, as well as advocating a system of government that is very far removed from the Islamist-Salafi vision of the extremist groups. But again, it is a question of priorities, and it is highly likely that Jabhat al-Nusra, like many other rebel groups, does not see the YPG as having any sustainable influence outside the majority-Kurdish areas that it already controls. While the YPG might be able to push some Arabs and Turkmen out of villages close to Kurdish enclaves, its ambition is strictly limited to consolidating the autonomy of ‘Rojava’—or Western Kurdistan—the state along the Turkish border that its political wing proclaimed in November 2013.

As Syria descends into a patchwork of statelets—each one with disputed borders but a stronger core—the future shape of the region may begin to emerge. One thing is for sure, however: although Turkey has established good and close relations with the Kurdish autonomous region in Iraq, it will not accept a similar area in Syria, especially if it falls under the control of the YPG, which, like its close affiliate the PKK, seeks greater independence for all Kurds. There are around 30 million Kurds in the region, of which almost half are in Turkey. Any suggestion that they too might achieve a measure of self-governance would go against everything that President Erdogan has worked for since his Justice and Development Party came to power in Turkey in 2002.

    Deutsche Welle:
Turkey: The calculating ways of Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Erdogan is dreaming of a coup d'etat. And this is why his military is bombing Kurdish militias in northern Iraq and Syria. His great adversary, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), is fighting back with terrorist attacks. A decadeslong conflict, which incidentally has cost the lives of tens of thousands, is once again on the political agenda despite a ceasefire agreed to by both sides in 2013. Polarization in Turkey, at least, appears not to have been thrown off track by the peace process.

A number of pro-government Turkish newspapers have launched stinging attacks on Germany, accusing Berlin of supporting Turkish terror groups and shielding prosecutors in exile who are wanted by Turkish courts.

The attacks came days after German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen announced on Saturday that the country would pull two Patriot missile batteries from Turkey in early 2016, ending a three-year presence to strengthen Turkish air defences out of fear that the Syrian Civil War would further spread across its border.

Turkey: Gunmen Detained Near Istanbul Palace
    August 19, 2015 | 12:40 GMT

After reports of gunfire near the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul, police have detained two gunmen, Reuters reported Aug. 19. The gunmen reportedly targeted police in the attack, and one policeman has minor injuries, Milliyet reported. Turkey has been struggling to balance political and security considerations. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Aug. 19 that the country would soon hold elections, since the ruling Justice and Development Party has failed to form a working government.

Following Davutoğlu's failure to form a government, leading CHP officials have argued that not giving the mandate to the CHP would represent a civilian coup d'etat by the president. According to Kılıçdaroğlu, refusing to confer the task on another party leader on the assumption that the effort would not bear fruit reveals a lack of faith in democracy.

If no new coalition partner is found by the end of next week, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to use his right to call for early election

    Al Arabiya News:
Turkey fails to form coalition, so what comes next?

By Menekse Tokyay | Special to Al Arabiya News, Istanbul

It was announced on Aug. 13 that weeks-long coalition talks between the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) - which lost its parliamentary majority in June elections - and the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) ended in failure.

This means Turkey now faces early elections due in autumn. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said snap elections seem to be “the only option” left. If no new coalition partner is found by the end of next week, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to use his right to call for early elections. In the latest meeting with Davutoglu, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) rejected forming a government with the AKP.
    Security implications

The increasing political uncertainty coincides with a mounting cross-border insurgencies from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

    Stratfor:
Turkey Seeks Military Power To Defend Energy Projects

    July 13, 2015

There has been growing military cooperation between Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan over the past six weeks. From May 31 to June 10, Turkish, Georgian and Azerbaijani military forces held a series of military exercises dubbed "Caucasian Eagle" in eastern Turkey. Several days earlier, on May 25, Baku hosted tactical drills by the armed forces of Azerbaijan and Turkey. These exercises are only a few of those already held this year and represent a continuation of last year's more limited military cooperation.

The recent increase in military activities in the South Caucasus by the three countries is partially motivated by recent political developments in the region. It coincides on the one hand with Moscow's heavy involvement in the Ukraine conflict and on the other with Ankara's growing desire to broaden its geopolitical role across its eastern and northeastern frontiers.

    Stratfor:
    Turkey's Unlikely Path

The following is an excerpt from a column written by Stratfor Vice President of Global Analysis Reva Bhalla that views geopolitics through the lens of quantum theory.
Albert Einstein described space-time as a smooth fabric distorted by objects in the universe. For him, the separation between past, present and future was merely a "stubbornly persistent illusion." Building on Einstein's ideas, celebrated U.S. physicist and Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman, some of whose best ideas came from drawings he scribbled on cocktail napkins in bars and strip clubs, focused on how a particle can travel in waves from point A to point B along a number of potential paths, each with a certain probability amplitude. In other words, a particle will not travel in linear fashion; it will go up, down and around in space, skirting other particle paths and colliding into others, sometimes reinforcing or canceling out another completely. According to Feynman's theory, the sum of all the amplitudes of the different paths would give you the "sum over histories" — the path that the particle actually follows in the end.

Turkey Will 'Very Soon' Begin Bombing ISIS in Iraq, Syria: Pentagon

    Aug 27, 2015 | by Richard Sisk

Turkey will soon have its warplanes bombing Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria as part of a deal that was complicated by Turkish politics and U.S. support for the Kurdish faction fighting in Syria.

The airstrikes were expected to begin "very soon" after details are finalized on the so-called air tasking order, or ATO, for targeting, said Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman.

ISTANBUL — Three journalists for the website Vice News have been formally arrested in southeast Turkey and charged with aiding a terrorist organization, four days after they were detained while covering the conflict between Kurdish separatists and the Turkish state.

Media rights groups denounced a ruling on Monday by a Turkish court, which said that Jake Hanrahan and Philip Pendlebury, both British citizens, and their Iraqi news assistant, Mohammed Ismael Rasool, had “knowingly and willingly helped an armed terrorist organization,” without being a part of its “hierarchical structure,” the semiofficial Anadolu News Agency reported.

    Stratfor:
A New Pipeline Feeds Turkey's Greater Ambitions
    Forecast

    • Turkish demand for energy will keep rising as the country industrializes, leaving Turkey reliant on energy imports for the foreseeable future.
    • Turkey will leverage its substantial negotiating power in TurkStream talks with Gazprom to secure significant discounts on Russian natural gas.
    • Turkey will continue to pursue other pipeline projects as part of its longer-term strategy to position itself as a regional energy transit hub to gain influence with its neighbors.

    Analysis

Editor's Note: Stratfor closely monitors the ebbs and flows of world energy. Aside from production, the transportation of crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products is of paramount concern for oil-producing nations. For energy consumers, transit routes are indispensible lifelines. A huge amount of the world's energy is transited through pipelines, across the Eurasian landmass in particular. In this periodic series we will examine some of the most geopolitically significant pipelines running through Europe and Asia. In this installment, Stratfor examines TurkStream, the successor to South Stream, from the Turkish perspective.

Europe and Russia continue to spar for political influence in Eurasia in the latest battle over Russia's TurkStream pipeline project, formerly known as Turkish Stream. But as the two major powers pursue loftier goals of power and containment, Turkey — a country with regional aspirations of its own — is quietly maneuvering to secure its position as a crucial energy transit hub at the crossroads of the Middle East, Europe and Asia.

Tyrkia kommer vel på femte plass over "viktige" land i NATO.
